My name is Marcos Hernandez Chavez, and I am a Mexico-born artist residing in Houston, Texas.

I'm connected to Houston via having lived here since I crossed the border illegally at eight years old, as well as having based my studio practice in town ever since I finished my undergraduate studies at North Texas in 2011.

This piece titled "Hacia el arco, por debajo del diluvio" is the second woven string piece I created, this back in 2020, in the first summer of the pandemic. I had developed this format to create compositions after years of experimenting with different materials. I have had drawings of lines that intersected in various ways and hoped to find a way to recreate this idea in a grander scale. This led to first using pegs on the wall to run a strip of cloth around but developed into pegboards in which I weaved layered expressionist compositions which I imbue with poetic undertones in order to help draw out the urgency of what I feel we're undertaking in our current day. It's not meant to be a premonition, but the title translates to, "Towards the arc, but under the deluge."

What inspired "Hacia el arco, por debajo del diluvio" was the feeling of urgency and uncertainty when our lives were disrupted first by a worldwide pandemic, but now even more from the climate to war to the instability of the institutions we took for granted. But it's meant to be a message of hope. As in the title, I hope to aspire to the ideals of the arc of the moral universe and understand that the deluge comes through all of us, but that we can withstand, and that's the spirit on which I wove this piece.

I am a Mexico-born and Houston-raised artist based on the northeast side of Houston. My work has been presented at the Galveston Art Center, the Fort Worth Community Art Center, the Station Museum of Contemporary Art in Houston, as well as spaces in Colorado, California, and New York. Over the last seven years in which I returned to Houston from Denton, Texas, I have been involved in a practice with artwork that came as a result of constant experimentation and reliance on construction materials and an expressionist compositional origin, with themes of labor, craft authorship, environmental and indigenous issues. I have continued to expand upon this practice, finding new materials to create work, and reaching back to the original art forms that formed my studies. I have been published in the "Houston Chronicle," "Glasstire," and "New American Paintings," among other publications. The most recent exhibition was "El baile de los que sobran" at Hooks-Epstein Gallery, and I am in an upcoming group show at The Orange Center of Visionary Art, both in Houston, Texas.

Estoy conectado a Houston porque viví aquí desde que crucé la frontera ilegalmente a los ocho años, además de haber basado mi práctica de estudio en la ciudad desde que terminé mis estudios universitarios en el norte de Texas en 2011.

Esta pieza titulada "Hacia el arco, por debajo del diluvio" es la segunda pieza de cuerda tejida que creé, allá por 2020, en el primer verano de la pandemia. Desarrollé este formato para crear composiciones después de años de experimentar con diferentes materiales. He tenido dibujos de líneas que se cruzan de varias maneras y esperaba encontrar una manera para recrear esta idea en una escala mayor. Esto me llevó a usar primero clavijas en la pared para pasar una tira de tela, pero se convirtió en tableros perforados en el que tejía composiciones expresionistas en capas que imbuí con matices poéticos para ayudar a resaltar la urgencia de lo que siento que estamos emprendiendo en nuestro día actual. No pretende ser una premonición, pero el título se traduce a, "Hacia el arco, por debajo del diluvio".

Lo que inspiró "Hacia el arco, por debajo del diluvio" fue el sentimiento de urgencia e incertidumbre cuando nuestras vidas fueron interrumpidas primero por una pandemia mundial, pero ahora aún más por el clima, la guerra, la inestabilidad de las instituciones que dábamos por sentado. Pero está destinado a ser un mensaje de esperanza. Como en el título, espero aspirar a los ideales del arco del universo moral y entender que el diluvio nos atraviesa a todos, pero que podemos resistir, y ese es el espíritu con el que tejí esta pieza.

Soy un artista nacido en México y criado en Houston que vive en el lado noreste de Houston. Mi trabajo ha sido presentado en el Galveston Art Center, el Centro de Arte Comunitario de Fort Worth, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Estación en Houston, así como espacios en Colorado, California y Nueva York. En los últimos siete años en los que regresé a Houston desde Denton, Texas, he estado involucrado en una práctica con obras de arte que surgieron como resultado de la experimentación constante y la dependencia de los materiales de construcción y un origen compositivo expresionista, con temas de autoría laboral, artesanal, temas ambientales e indígenas. He seguido ampliando esta práctica, encontrando nuevos materiales para crear obras y volver a las formas de arte originales que formaron mis estudios. Me han publicado en el "Houston Chronicle", "Glasstire" y "New American Paintings," entre otras publicaciones.
