My name is Haoua Amadou. I am an educator and visual artist based in Houston, Texas.

My connection to Houston is that I moved here in 2019 to pursue my Master's in Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston, Texas.

The art piece titled ‘Lagny’ is a part of my recent body of work called "Unraveling the Past". "Unraveling the Past" is a collection of works inspired by my migration journey, where I try to desperately reconnect with my homeland of Cameroon, after migrating away from a young age.

The inspiration came from feeling displaced or awkward when I get asked specific questions regarding my birth country. I struggle with the idea of not being Cameroonian enough in my Cameroonian community because I have been away for so long, and also not being French or American enough. American enough, specifically, because I am still stuck in the American immigration process at this time. So in this piece, I reflect on these emotions through the usage of archival images gifted to me by family members, and then collaging them to images that I have shot myself. And overall, I am creating my own visual language by dissecting, distorting, while overlaying bits of images and colors, all in reference to memories from my childhood. The goal here is to recollect this idea of what home should have been, was, is, and might be or feel like in this point in time, for me.

Haoua Amadou is a visual artist and instructor at the University of Houston, Texas. She earned a BFA with a concentration in photography from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Amadou obtained her MFA in studio art with a focus on photography and digital media from the University of Houston. She is a French citizen from Cameroon, and has been in the U.S. since 2009. Amadou's interest in photography stems from the darkroom using digital-analog techniques. She loves the aesthetic of the process and the challenges it creates. Her work is an investigation of challenges of migration and identity ambiguity through the mediums of photography and video. Haoua Amadou's work has been exhibited at Alliance Française de Singapour, in Singapore, Blaffer Museum, Hardy & Nance Studios, the University of New Orleans, The Engine Room in New Orleans, Louisiana, Fletcher Hall Gallery, and Acadiana Center for the Arts, in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Mi conexión con Houston es que me mudé aquí en 2019 para obtener mi maestría en Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Houston, Texas.

La obra de arte titulada ‘Lagny’ es parte de mi trabajo reciente llamado "Desentrañando el pasado". "Desentrañando el pasado" es una colección de obras inspiradas en mi viaje migratorio, en el que trato desesperadamente de reconectarme con mi tierra natal de Camerún, después de emigrar desde muy joven.

La inspiración vino de sentirme desplazada o incómoda cuando me hacen preguntas específicas sobre mi país de origen. Lucho con la idea de no ser lo suficientemente camerunesa en mi comunidad camerunesa porque he estado fuera durante tanto tiempo, y también de no ser lo suficientemente francesa o estadounidense. Lo suficientemente estadounidense, específicamente, porque todavía estoy atrapada en el proceso de inmigración estadounidense en este momento. Entonces, en esta pieza, reflexiono sobre estas emociones con el uso de imágenes de archivo que me regalaron miembros de la familia, y luego los hago collage con imágenes que yo misma tomé. Y, en general, estoy creando mi propio lenguaje visual diseccionando, distorsionando superponiendo fragmentos de imágenes y colores, todo en referencia a los recuerdos de mi infancia. El objetivo aquí es recordar esta idea de lo que el hogar debería haber sido, fue, es y podría ser o sentir en este momento para mí.

Haoua Amadou es artista visual e instructora en la Universidad de Houston, Texas. Obtuvo un BFA con especialización en fotografía de la Universidad de Luisiana en Lafayette.
