My name is Julia Barbosa Landois, and I'm a video, performance, and installation artist of Mexican descent.

My connection to Houston is that I moved here in 2017 from my native city of San Antonio. I moved with my family to a neighborhood next to Brays Bayou just three weeks before Hurricane Harvey.

This piece, titled "Suburban Labyrinth," is a room-sized walking meditation labyrinth made of wood salvaged from home debris piles following Hurricane Harvey. The materials come from my own badly flooded neighborhood where the idea of being trapped in the suburbs took on a terrifyingly literal meaning as boats floated down our street and neighbors fled their homes. Among the labyrinth pieces are closet walls, kitchen shelves, mid-century custom cabinets, and disassembled IKEA furniture. The sculpture became a labor of love, an homage to my new home and the neighbors who helped care for my family and so many others.

The painted path design is inspired by the often labyrinthine streets of Houston housing developments carved by Bayou pathways, redlining, and disregard for walkability. The design is a composite of some of the weirdest sections from my neighborhood and others throughout the city. I'm a little embarrassed to say that even after five years, I can still get lost a few blocks from my house. The sculpture also calls to mind the endless sprawl of Texas cities, the waste cycle of construction, and the irony of slowly traversing on foot, a map made by the culture of cars. When it was time to disassemble "Suburban Labyrinth," the materials went back into the community from whence they came, the wood became a neighbor's backyard furniture, project scraps for University of Houston art students, patches for a horse barn, and, finally, another tiny debris pile.

Julia Barbosa Landois, she/her, is a multidisciplinary artist who was born and raised in San Antonio and moved to Houston in 2017. Her installations, videos, performances, and works on paper have been exhibited throughout the USA and in Latin America and Europe. Her awards include grants from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, and Houston Arts Alliance. In 2018-2019, Barbosa Landois was a resident in Lawndale Art Center's Artist Studio Program. In addition to her studio practice, she's worked in the arts as a professor, exhibitions coordinator, grant writer, and community educator.

Mi conexión con Houston es que me mudé aquí en 2017 desde mi ciudad natal, San Antonio. Me mudé con mi familia a un vecindario al lado de Brays Bayou solo tres semanas antes del huracán Harvey.

Esta pieza, titulada "Suburban Labyrinth", es un laberinto de meditación para caminar del tamaño de una habitación hecho de madera recuperada de montones de escombros después del Huracán Harvey. Los materiales provienen de mi propio vecindario gravemente inundado, donde la idea de estar atrapada en los suburbios adquirió un significado literalmente aterrador cuando los botes flotaron por nuestra calle y los vecinos huyeron de sus hogares. Entre las piezas del laberinto se encuentran las paredes de los armarios, los estantes de la cocina, los gabinetes personalizados de mediados de siglo y los muebles IKEA desarmados. La escultura se convirtió en un trabajo de amor, un homenaje a mi nuevo hogar y a los vecinos que ayudaron a cuidar de mi familia y de tantos otros.

El diseño del camino pintado está inspirado en las calles a menudo laberínticas de los desarrollos de viviendas de Houston talladas por los caminos del pantano, las líneas rojas y el desprecio por la transitabilidad. El diseño es una combinación de algunas de las secciones más extrañas de mi vecindario y otras de la ciudad. Me da un poco de vergüenza decir que incluso después de cinco años, todavía puedo perderme a unas pocas cuadras de mi casa. La escultura también recuerda la expansión interminable de las ciudades de Texas, el ciclo de desperdicio de la construcción y la ironía de atravesar lentamente a pie, un mapa hecho por la cultura de los automóviles. Cuando llegó el momento de desmontar "Suburban Labyrinth", los materiales regresaron a la comunidad de donde procedían, la madera se convirtió en el mobiliario del patio trasero de un vecino, restos de proyectos para estudiantes de Artes de la Universidad de Houston, parches para un establo de caballos y, finalmente, otra pequeña pila de escombros.
